A few weeks ago, I decided to take my health tracking up a notch. I consider myself someone who is pretty dialed-in when it comes to fitness training, health, and overall wellbeing. I already train consistently—whether I’m in the gym, on the bike, or on the trail—and I read the research, listen to the podcasts, and pay close attention to how I fuel my body.

But curiosity got the better of me when I was offered an opportunity to try a full body fitness scan. I wanted more than just the numbers on my Strava feed or the metrics from my watch. I wanted real feedback, real insights into what was actually going on beneath the surface. So I lined up a series of advanced health tests: a comprehensive blood panel, a DEXA scan, and a VO₂ max test.

The results were surprising—eye-opening, even. They revealed blind spots in my training I never would have noticed on my own.

And that’s exactly how financial planning works. You can be disciplined, intentional, and do “everything right” on your own, but until you consult with a professional who can show you the full picture, you may not be operating at your highest level.

Outsourcing isn’t about handing over control; it’s about uncovering what you can’t see on your own so you can truly maximize wealth.

The Power of Advanced Metrics

I started with a Function Health blood test that ran more than a hundred different markers. It gave me a deep look at everything from metabolic health to cellular function—far beyond what I’d ever seen in a standard physical. That alone was worth the effort.

Next came the DEXA scan. A DEXA scan is a full body scan that identifies and gives you a profile of what your body composition looks like. It gives you highly accurate data of your body fat, your lean mass, your bone density, and a whole host of other markers.

Finally, I went through a VO₂ max test, twenty minutes of steadily increasing intensity on a bike. This one was especially revealing, because it showed me the gap between how hard I thought I was working and the actual results I was producing. The data revealed gaps in my approach that I couldn’t see until a professional analyzed the numbers for me.

That’s the financial parallel. You can save, invest, and stay informed, but without the right individualized analysis, you’ll miss what matters most.

Just like my VO₂ max test forced me to confront hidden inefficiencies, a comprehensive financial plan allows you to uncover financial blind spots that are quietly slowing your progress. The right professional shows you where to adjust so you can move faster toward your goals.

Surprising Results, Surprising Parallels

When I went into these tests, I expected to see confirmation that I was on track. I train consistently. I ride long distances on the bike. I’ve run marathons and trail races. I’ve even lined up for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race and pushed myself through stage races in the Rockies. Endurance sports are part of my lifestyle.

But instead of validating my beliefs, the results caught me off guard. They highlighted massive gaps between the effort I was putting in and the outcomes I was getting. I wasn’t training as efficiently as I thought. I had blind spots in my approach that were holding me back, and I never would have seen them without the data staring me in the face.

That disconnect is something I see in wealth planning, too.

You can be intentional, motivated, and doing most things right—but still fall short without the right feedback. That’s why outsourcing to a Wealth Advisor is so powerful: it helps you uncover financial blind spots and align your effort with real results.

The Financial Blind Spots We All Miss

I see the same pattern play out with my clients. High-earning professionals often come to me with strong careers, consistent savings habits, and ambitious goals. On paper, they’re doing all the right things.

But dig a little deeper, and gaps start to show. Maybe their tax strategy isn’t aligned with their long-term vision. Maybe their investment mix doesn’t reflect their actual goals. Or maybe they know where they want to go but don’t have the confidence (or consistency) to get there.

That’s where I step in.

My role is to provide clarity, stress-test the plan, and reveal the areas that could be stronger. It’s all about smarter alignment. In other words, it’s mindful wealth: creating strategies that not only grow your net worth, but also bring confidence and calm to the process.

Client Success Story: When the Blind Spot Becomes the Breakthrough

One couple I worked with recently stands out as a perfect example. They were in their late thirties with two young kids, already saving diligently and committed to building long-term security. From the outside, it looked like they were on track. But inside their household, there was tension. One spouse preferred holding more cash, the other pushed for aggressive investing. Neither was wrong, but the lack of alignment created stress and stalled progress.

Together, we built a strategy that honored both perspectives. We kept enough cash on hand to provide comfort and security, while also structuring their investments to work harder for them. Over time, not only did their portfolio grow significantly, but so did their peace of mind. They no longer argued over “who was right,” because they had a clear plan that worked for both.

If they hadn’t brought in a professional, they would have kept wrestling with a highly inefficient push-pull process. By outsourcing the conversation, they gained perspective they couldn’t have found on their own. That’s the difference between staying stuck and moving forward with clarity.

That’s the kind of transformation I love to see. When you uncover financial blind spots and build a comprehensive financial plan, the focus shifts from worry to progress. Small adjustments unlock new levels of growth and, just as importantly, reduce the stress that comes from uncertainty.

Strategy, Stress Tests, and Smarter Planning

In fitness, you wouldn’t just train randomly and hope you’re ready for race day. You’d follow a plan designed for the distance, the terrain, and the goal. Financial planning is no different. You can be disciplined about saving and investing, but if everything isn’t aligned with your actual objectives, you risk falling short when it matters most.

That’s why I place such importance on stress testing a portfolio.

Over the last fifteen years, markets have seen some bumps, but we haven’t lived through anything on the scale of the dot-com bubble, the global financial crisis, or the days following 9/11. If you haven’t prepared your finances for a true downturn, you don’t really know how strong your strategy is.

When we run these stress tests, the goal isn’t to create fear, it’s to provide clarity. Just like a VO₂ max test exposes inefficiencies in training, a financial stress test exposes weaknesses you can address now, before they become costly mistakes. It’s about shifting from guesswork to intentional action, from ‘effort for effort’s sake’ to measurable results. That’s what mindful personal finance is all about: making decisions that are grounded, data-driven, and aligned with the life you actually want.

Case Study: The Hidden Costs of Transition

Not long ago, I worked with a woman preparing to leave her corporate job to launch her own business. She was sharp, ambitious, and eager for the next chapter. But in our conversation, I noticed something she hadn’t thought through: what would happen to her benefits once she left her employer?

Her group life insurance, disability coverage, and healthcare were all tied to her company. Without a plan, she would lose them the moment she resigned. This was a blind spot. And it didn’t appear because she was incapable. It was because she was so focused on growth, she hadn’t considered what protections would disappear in the transition.

Together, we found solutions. She and her family switched to her husband’s healthcare plan, we secured disability coverage, and we set up new life insurance to protect her future. That shift turned what could have been a dangerous gap into a secure foundation for her business journey.

The point I am hammering home here is that an outside perspective helps you ‘train’ smarter, not harder. It helps you create more efficiency and effectiveness in whatever financial process you are pursuing.

That’s the essence of working with an outsource financial planner. It’s not our job to manage what you already know, but to uncover financial blind spots you don’t see coming and to adjust your trajectory ‘just so’ to ensure you meet your goals faster.

Case Study: The Reality of Early Retirement

Another client I worked with—a high-achieving sales professional—came in with a very clear goal: retire at 52. He was confident he was on track. He was saving aggressively, maxing out his 401(k), and checking all the conventional boxes.

But when we ran the numbers through a full financial model, the results were not what he expected. At his current pace, he would run out of money by age 59, just seven years into retirement. Talk about a blind spot.

The turning point came when I showed him the data. He was able to see, in black and white, what his future would look like if he stayed the course. That clarity shifted everything for him. Together, we adjusted his plan to give him flexibility: options to save more, optimize his investments, and rethink the timing of retirement.

This is where holistic financial leadership makes the difference. My client needed perspective, strategy, and accountability. By outsourcing the planning process, he uncovered blind spots that could have derailed his goal entirely. Instead, we gave him a roadmap he could feel confident about.

Aligning Health and Wealth

What I learned from my fitness testing is the same lesson I bring to financial planning every day: effort matters, but strategy matters more.

You can read all the books, listen to all the podcasts, and put in all the hours, but without the right guidance, you may still be training in the wrong zone, both in the gym and with your money.

That’s why I believe so strongly in approaching finances with intention.

Your health, career, family, and goals are all interconnected. Stress in one area bleeds into the others, and clarity in one area strengthens the rest. A strong plan doesn’t just build wealth, it builds confidence, reduces anxiety, and frees you to live fully.

At Four Points Wealth, that’s the cornerstone of our work. We help clients find the blind spots, stress test their portfolios, and create strategies that align with their values.

Because even the most disciplined athletes need coaches to uncover what they can’t see on their own. Why wouldn’t the same apply to disciplined professionals? Outsourcing to an experienced wealth advisor isn’t about giving up control; it’s about finally unlocking the full potential of your wealth.
